How to Easily Write a Best Man Speech

If you're the best man at your friend's wedding, then chances are you know the groom very well. And maybe by now you're aware that everyone is expecting you to give a best man speech - a toast - at the wedding reception. There are a few things you should keep in mind when preparing this speech.

*Be prepared! Don't wing it. Even if you're quick-witted (of course you are!), even the most glib person's mind can go completely blank without warning.

Even if you don't feel like writing the whole thing down, at least take the time to jot down a few key points and phrases.

*It's okay to be funny, but be serious. Sure it sounds like an oxymoron, but it's still important. Without a little humor, you risk boring the guests.

However, it's imperative to remember that your best man speech is a tribute to a couple's new life together. Both of them are taking their marriage seriously, and they need to know that you honor that. While sarcasm might be fun in the right situations, it is very dangerous territory and should NEVER be used in a wedding speech.

*Be concise. Don't go rambling on, please. Practice at least once in front of one other person!if their eyes start to glaze over, find something to cut!

*Watch the anecdotes. Whatever you do, avoid telling stories about old wives and girlfriends, and avoid reminding all the guests about something particularly embarrassing. This won't endear you to your friend's new wife. You want your buddy's wife to like you at least a little, or you won't be seeing him much after the wedding!

*Share something you like - something appropriate! - about the bride. Don't forget, you want to be endearing yourself to her.

*Last but not least, be sincere. You were chosen as best man for a reason. Remember that, and share your joy in your good friend's happiness, and your best man speech will be remembered with thanks.
